WALLPAPERS

WALLPAPER one of the most interesting interior element nowadays ..
why not its quick , budget friendly (coming in approximately in every price range ) & top of all amazing to change a lot with very little change in a space.

No wallpaper comes in a varied kind of rang from its type to durability everything should be known before choosing one ..
do not worry
We are here to solve your all problems out

Starting up with the basic wallpaper type  lets start with

Lining Papers

Lining Papers are important. When used either vertically or horizontally (cross-lined) they form
a good base on which to hang the finishing decorative wallpaper. As mentioned above, when the
base wall is uneven, or the final paper is of a delicate nature, this helps to achieve a better finish
and enhance its wear ability. With very heavy papers, or a particularly smooth and dry surface to
start with, they can occasionally be dispensed with. Lining papers are available in various
weights, and should butt jointed - edges should meet and not overlap.

then comes

Pitch Papers

Pitch Papers consist of a thin film of bitumen sandwiched between two sheets of tough brown
paper, or cartridge paper coated with pitch, that are used to withhold or stop damp penetration.

 Washable Papers

Washable Papers are ordinary wallpapers coated with a
thin transparent glaze of PVA (polyvinyl acetate). They
may have a matt or gloss finish and are ideal for kitchens
or bathrooms as they can be washed down with a clean
sponge and soapy water. They should not be scrubbed as
this can damage the coating.

 Vinyl Papers

Vinyl Papers consist of a layer of vinyl on which the design is printed. The printed design and
vinyl are then fused by heat to give a tough, impervious paper ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and
playrooms. Because they tend to trap moisture against the wall, they should be hung using a
fungicidal paste.

 Blown or Expanded Vinyl Papers

Blown or Expanded Vinyl Papers are thicker
and more durable than ordinary vinyls, and
suitable for use in areas subjected to heavier
wear.

 Foamed Polyethylene Coverings,
Foamed Polyethylene Coverings trade named "Novamura", are foam plastic coverings with no
backing paper. They produce an attractive, lightweight wallcovering with a soft, warm finish, but
are unsuitable for areas which take heavy wear.

 Ready-Pasted Wallpapers

Ready-Pasted Wallpapers are now very common and, while naturally more expensive than
normal wallpaper, are a real boon to the DIY decorator. A carefully calculated layer of adhesive
already containing fungicide is applied to the back of the paper during manufacture, and it is then
a simple matter to measure and cut the strips to size and immerse them in water for the duration

PAINT FINISHES

PAINT FINISHES

Well when we now know about the types of paint we really need to their finishes.

Paint are available in various finishes. So let us now understand some basic finishes
Which are available and which one suits your purpose well.

Matt Paint

Matt color is the most common of interior wall paints. There’s no shine or sheen to the finish, making it ideal for walls and ceilings where you don't want any visual distractions. It’s easy to apply, although it can often take more than a single coat to create a good solid color. Matt paint can be applied with a brush or roller and works well on walls that have imperfections. This makes it ideal for older houses. On the downside, matt paint is easily marked. Although some marks can be removed with a damp cloth, matt paint needs regular retouching.

Matt Enamel

Matt enamel is very much like matt paint, but tends to be far more durable. It’s much easier to clean and rarely needs retouching, giving it a great advantage, especially if you have young children. It is also excellent for the kitchen, where you’ll regularly need to wipe walls. The visual effect is very similar to matt paint and it can be applied in the same way.

Satin

Satin finish is one of the types of interior wall paint that many people know of, but few really understand. The finish is somewhere between matt and gloss and produces a low, soft sheen. This makes it ideal for areas where you’ll need to clean the walls regularly. However, you shouldn’t use a satin finish where you have a wall with imperfections because it will make them more apparent.

Eggshell

An eggshell finish has a shine that’s extremely subtle but without the same smoothness as a satin finish. Thus, it doesn’t highlight imperfections quite as much, making it much more suitable as an interior wall paint. It’s easy to apply and can often cover in a single coat, making it a better choice for many people.
“Shiny paints bring out imperfections. Spackle spots and other repairs are greatly accentuated by shiny paint, and they have to be perfect. Flat hides, shiny brings out repairs. Also, spackle spots must be primed or they will show up as flat spots in the shiny paint. The best way to cover spackle and repair patches under semi gloss is to buy a quart of flat paint tinted to the color of the finish coat and spot prime the repairs.

Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss is another common interior paint, although it’s more commonly used on trim rather than the walls. It offers a hard finish, is suitable to heavy use and is easy to clean with just soap and water. The shine produced is less than full gloss paint, but it’s usually easy to achieve a good covering with just a single coat.

Gloss Paint

Apart from matt paint, gloss paint is the most common interior wall paint. It’s one you can use on most walls, although some people use it sparingly on these surfaces and prefer to use it on woodwork because of its high shine. Gloss paint shows up all the imperfections on a wall and achieving an even coverage on a wall will often need more than a single coat of paint.
“Note that shiny paints take longer to dry, so plan your project with hours of drying time between coats. Fans will speed up drying.”

GET IT PAINTED

GET IT PAINTED

Paints well before we look after which type of paint to be used we must know what paints actually are..
Well paints are (coatings of fluid materials) applied over the surfaces of timber and metals as protective coatings. Yes!! Paints when first introduced were introduced like protective coatings but now days they have more aesthetic value than the functional one.
We know choosing the type of paint is a tough job especially when you don’t have a guide with so many available choices which one to use. So here we are your guide for a better choice.

So before knowing types of paint let us first consider some precautions before painting a surface ..

·          The surface to be painted should be perfectly clean and dry.

·          Painting work should be carried out in dry, warm weather after a dry spell.

·          Each coat of paint should be of moderate thickness for drying.

·          The undercoats and first coats must invariably be allowed to dry properly before applying
the final coat.

Always rub down lightly between coats.

For exposed works, boiled linseed oil should be used.

The work should be planned in such a way that the specific part (door, ceiling) is
completed in the same day.

Now when we know some basics of painting let us now understand the types of paint available in market and which to use according to your purpose.

Emulsion paint:
These paints are mostly employed for painting steel and woodwork which is to be built in
masonry. It is easy to apply and dries quickly (in aboutI~ to 2 hours) .The paint possesses
excellent alkali resistance. The colour of the paint is retained for-a long period. The surface
of paint is tough and it can be cleaned by washing with water.

Enamel Paint:
Employed for painting door and window frames and protecting timber and other woodbased
products. These paints are used for both external and internal works. It dries slowly and forms
a hard and durable surface. It is not affected by cold and hot water. It is a little costlier but economical in the longrun. It is resistant to steam, fumes, acids and alkalise. It is durable and forms a tough, elastic and glossy film.

Luminous paint:
The luminous paint is applied on the surfaces
which are free from corrosion or any other lead paint. The surface
on which this paint is applied shines like radium dials of
watches after the light source has been cut-off.

Silicate Paint:
The paint can be directly applied on brick, plaster or concrete surface; these surfaces
should be made wet before the paint is applied. The surface should not be painted with silicate
paint in hot weather. It can stand extreme heat. It adheres firmly to brickwork also. It is not
affected by alkalise. The paint has no chemical action on metals. The paint when dried forms
a hard durable surface.

Plastic paint:
These paints are widely used for auditoriums, show rooms,
cinema halls etc. Following points are worth noting regarding the
use of plastic emulsion paints:

i. As these paints cannot resist the attack of enemies of paints (e.g. salts, dust, gases carried
by air. fog, rain etc.), these should be mainly used for interior jobs.

ii. The surface to be painted should be cleaned of all dust particles and rubbed with sand
paper if necessary, if required levelling putty may be applied.

iii. These paints are water based and hence they are not suitable for metallic surfaces. These
paints are not water repellent and may develop some fungus growth in unfavourable
circumstances.

iv. The thickness of coat should neither be too thin nor too thick.

v. The painted surfaces need to be washed with wet cloth lightly at least once in a month,
failing which the paint may loose its good appearance due to adherence of the dust
particles.

Now  when you know about types of paint then flaunt your spaces with them …

COLORS IN INTERIORS

                                         Colours in interior

Well it may seem that choosing colors for interior is easy and albumen but its not ..
Colours play a very important role in interiors they can change the whole ambiance of a space .
colors not only bring the change in look of space but also in the human behavior .. yes its true !!
human behavior changes with colors .. some color make us feel cool and some volatile our mind ,
well not just that also colors can make us feel beautiful and also dull in the mirror ..
To understand which color to choose from the wide palate it is very much necessary to understand
colour psychology first . Color has its own attributes like hue , value and chrome but if you just
feeling like changing shades for your house you don’t need to get so deep in it .. you can go
through the various color psychologies available on internet  ya but if you are a professional
and you want to decide which colors should be chosen for a particular space you really need to
understand the behavior of colors through the attributes .

At times you can play with colors without having them . In simple you can play with the color
of materials and finishes.

Well colours also seem different with different amount and type of light so be  a little particular
about your choice the kind of climate colors are exposed to & also to the amount , type and
color of light. Even the surface texture changes the feel of color either smooth or rough.

Here are some colour philosophies which you can choose  to get  how to choose a better colour
for your space.

Color philosophies
Red is associated with blood, and with feelings that are energetic, exciting, passionate or erotic.
Most colours carry both positive and negative implications. The downside of red evokes
aggressive feelings, suggesting anger or violence.

Orange is the colour of flesh, or the friendly warmth of the hearth fire. The positive implications
of this colour suggest approachability, informality. The negative side might imply accessibility to
the point of suggesting that anyone can approach-- a lack of discrimination or quality.

Yellow is the colour of sunshine. This colour is optimistic, upbeat, modern. The energy of yellow
can become overwhelming. Therefore yellow is not a colour that tends to dominate fashion for
long periods of time.

Green In its positive mode, green suggests nature (plant life, forests), life, stability, restfulness,
and naturalness. On the other hand, green in some tones or certain contexts (such as green skin)
might instead suggest decay (fungus, mould), toxicity, and artificiality.

Blue suggests coolness, distance, spirituality, or perhaps reserved elegance. Some shade of blue
is flattering to almost anyone. In its negative mode, we can think of the "blues"-the implication
being one of sadness, passivity, alienation, or depression.

Violet is the colour of fantasy, playfulness, impulsiveness, and dream states. In its negative
mode, it can suggest nightmares, or madness.

Space planning

Space planning is one of the most important aspect of interior design . Yes ! interior design not architecture . There is a myth that an architect plans up a space but truth is that an interior designer can plan it better as he/she knows better of the client requirement . the very basic procedure of space planning is that the client goes to an interior designer first . They do the basic space planning or better say segregation of spaces . The client then goes up to an architect who further corrects the drawing on the basis of structural elements . This is because an interior designer knows better about the requirements of the client , to make it according to vastu  or to include a particular area , is some space , a space which can be added on or some which can be eliminated .

Space planning is adds up to the customization of a particular space . It adds up to the beauty and grace . Space planning can change the entire ambiance of  space  a residential space may look entirely like a office by just the way it is planned . So be very much assured at the time of planning.

i hope this knowledge will help you much before you begin up with your new projects.

Understang Interior Design

What is design

Design is not what you learn , create or imagine . It is something what you observe , feel and express in your own way . Design is boundless .Design can never be an accident but accidents can bring out brilliant Design.

Design is something you encounter everyday, everywhere and in every moment in your life .Even the spoon you eat with is an example of brilliant Design .

here i would like to mention very beautiful lines by Sir Steve Jobs

"Design is not just how it looks like and feels like.Design is how it works."

And this is what a designer is meant for , being a designer do not actually means using abstract forms, shapes or colors to enhance the beauty rather it means to combine the aesthetics with functional part to create a customized and well functioned Design.

Elan Design Studio is an Interior Design Studio which provides customized( both functionally and aesthetically ) Interior Spaces to the Client .

We at elan also understand that one need to understand the basics of interior design to make their spaces flaunt with their own belief . This blog is just a small effort to create a basic sense of design and understand the types of materials , finishes and environments which are meant to be created by
a Designer.
